I was referred here by a friend while visiting St Simons Island. Yes, there are some incredible restaurants on the island but this one really fit the bill. There are times when you just want a quiet, tucked out of the way place. Simple with good authentic food. Chili Peppers fit the bill. This is a tiny Mexican restaurant that is as authentic as they come. The owner Mayte is from Mexico. She is an incredible cook in her own right and had developed a menu of totally authentic food. The front of the building features a take out that is quite busy. Around the side is a door into a small rear dining room. The place is clean, cozy, and looks exactly like you expect a small Mexican restaurant to look. The staff was friendly, and the food was really delicious. Please note, there is no liquor license. But there is a liquor store right across the parking lot. They had no problem allowing us to BYOB. Nice comfy place for an authentic dinner!

Our first time and we're pretty happy with our meal. The cheese dip w/ chorizo was good. Also ordered the carne asada and shrimp tacos. The carne asada was excellent. The hot sauce was definitely super spicy!!

We were looking forward to a small, casual and quaint Mexican dining experience when we arrived. The margaritas were good and the cheese dip with chorizo and guacamole were very good. However, they we over whelmed with a larger table and we waited longer than we should have for our entrees. When they arrived, they didn't taste like Mexican food at all - rather, the shrimp tacos tasted eerily similar to the Thai restaurant next door. Do they share the same kitchen?? Apps and drinks were good - not crazy about the meal.

The four of us were stunned at the quality and freshness of this small venue. Highly recommended by all four of us each having different entrees. A must try for visitors and worth a regular visit by locals. And the price is right.

This place is very small and hot even with AC & fans blowing. The food is average and the tortilla chips are OK at best. The salsa dip is thin but fresh with tomatoes, cilantro and peppers. The carne asada was salty in areas, very thin skirt beef and the sides were OK. The plate portions are good size and include lettuce, pico de gallo, re fried beans with cheese, and two cheese enchilada with salsa verde. This is typical Mexican-American food and does not stand out. The shrimp tacos were pretty good and flavorful. The chicken enchilada had shredded chicken in a sauce-that was ok. Overall 3 stars-average.

We gave this place a try while on vacation at SSI, and were craving Mexican food. At first glance this looks like a walk up only place, but just to the side is the door leading to the indoor dining area. It's very small, only a few tables. Truly a 'hole in the wall' type place. It was really delicious! The cheese dip portion was huge, much bigger than the one we get back home. We had burritos (carne asada and beef/bean mix with cheese dip on top) and they were both delicious! The service was great too! Give this place a try!

We stopped in for lunch after receiving a strong recommendation from a friend. We were not disappointed. One of us had the chorizo, potato and egg burrito; the other ordered the machaca and egg burrito. Excellent! (I'm bewildered as to how a previous reviewer concluded this place was expensive.) Here's how I'd rate today's experience: Service : 4.5 Ambiance/interior: 3 Food taste and quality: 4 or better Value: 4 They have take-out at the front window (see photo). One enters the small dining room via the side entrance. We'll be back!

5 stars on the guacamole and Margarita. Food is very good too and the people are very nice. Love this hole in the wall.. Good place to eat.

I find this establishment to be quite mediocre. They offer 2 menus. One for lunch and one for dinner, I could only assume. Offer 1 if they are both available. The food is not terrible. It truly is just OK. I've eaten here on several occasions and have had the same mediocre experience. I want it to be good and it's been a let down every time. Guess I've finally learned my lesson.

From Tucson to New York and everything in between, this is the best authentic Mexican food, everything homemade and fresh, fresh, fresh! The owner Mayte is absolutely delightful, and the place is cute, colorful and cheerful. From the best guacamole we've ever tasted, and the spicy salsa to whet your appetite, to the very last entrée, everything was spot on. The sampler platter was wonderful for the four of us as a starter, especially with the house Margarita. YES, they have a liquor license and full bar service! Besides everything being absolutely terrific, the portions were very substantial and priced as a real value. We drove away trying to figure out how many more times we could get back there while on our St. Simon's vacation. Don't miss out on any opportunity to meet Mayte and enjoy her excellent fare.

Delicious!!!!!! Best in town. Too bad many people don't know about it because it's small & tucked away. Great food! Nice people. Looks like only a take out place but there is also dining inside (entrance on side of building). Great!!!!

A great authentic Mexican restaurant! While on holiday to St. Simons Island, I was very happy to find this restaurant. The restaurant is simple with a small dining room and outdoor seating at the front. They have a beer and wine license. The staff is friendly and attentive. The restaurant is family-run with recipes perfected from their grandmother and their family origins in the Mexican gulf state of Veracruz so the menu has a great selection of flavorful choices with plentiful seafood options. I particularly enjoyed the chicken mole enchiladas and was most impressed with the authentic mole sauce which was wonderful!!! The owner explained their goal of sourcing the best ingredients including freshly made corn tortillas from a local nearby tortillaria and Mexican bakery. Don't expect the bar scene of the chain Mex restaurants. Don't come looking for margaritas, a sports bar or large TVs. Do come for the great, fresh authentic Mexican food! You'll enjoy it and will be glad you came!

I am very impressed with Chili Peppers. The food was excellent, prices reasonable, and the service was quick. I had the pork tamal special. It was definitely better than any other tamales I have ever eaten. Made in house, light masa dough (not heavy like most), and filled with fork-tender pork in a chili sauce. Excellent. Rice and beans were also both homemade and excellent. The owner is a kind Mexican lady who clearly knows and respects traditional Mexican cuisine. It's tough to find great, authentic Mexican food, and this spot has great potential. I look forward to going back!

The food is mediocre and over priced. The food quality is comparable to any Mexican chain restaurant. The rice and beans must come in cans from the same fast food supplier. The salsa has some spice to it, but the chips are stale, cold and greasy. The $9 "grilled chicken quesadilla" had a thin layer of chicken shreds, a thin layer of colby jack cheese and a funky off-putting flavor. The beef tacos either had really beige beef, or were made with chicken instead. Either way they had no flavor. I can't help but think the great reviews on here are from friends. There are better Mexican restaurants on the island and in Brunswick.

Great little place- small but lots of atmosphere and all the food is fresh. They make their own tortillas so the taco chips are homemade. Delicious!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
